Front Matter and Part One: The Bet
· The following version of this memoir was used to create this Lesson Plan: Obama, Barack. A Promised Land. New York, Crown, 2020.
· Following title and copyright information, a dedication to his wife and daughters, epigraphs from a spiritual and from Robert Frost, and a table of contents, Obama opens a preface noting the circumstances of the memoir’s composition.
· Obama articulates his purposes in writing the book: offering an authentic account of his time in office that imparts a sense of what being President is like, to humanize it and inspire younger readers.
· Obama also articulates his expectations for the book, noting that he failed to meet them; the circumstances that occasion the failure are discussed at some length.
· Noted, too, are prevailing circumstances in the United States as the memoir is composed, including unemployment numbers and the COVID-19 crisis.
