· The story begins with a description of John’s father.
· John stands in the doorway of his hut and watches his father “frail but energetic” (55), walking down the village street.
· John’s father holds a bag containing a Bible and hymnbook.
· The narrator notes that John’s father made his mother stop telling John stories once he became a preacher.
· John fears his father and warns his mother that his father is on his way home.
· John feels nervous when his father calls him to stop and sit.
· John wonders if his father has somehow found out what he has been hiding from...
