Objective
A Long Walk to Water is a novel based on a true story by Newberry Medal winning author Linda Sue Park. The novel relates the stories of two protagonists from Southern Sudan, with one storyline beginning in 1985 and the other taking place in 2008. Nya, an 11-year-old girl, must make two trips every day to fetch water for her family. Salva is introduced in 1985 as he sits in a classroom. This lesson focuses on setting. Students will research the history, culture, and geography of Sudan and will discuss the two timelines established in Chapter 1.

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read Chapter 1 of A Long Walk to Water. As a group, discuss the reading and the two timelines that are established in South Sudan in Chapter 1. Create a chart that details the settings and characters in each timeline. How old are Nya...
