Lesson 1 (from Part 1: "Beer in Mesopotamia and Egypt")

Objective

This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book A History of the World in 6 Glasses, by Tom Standage. Students will read the Introduction: “Vital Fluids,” research the author, and discuss the author’s hypothesis that is established in his opening. This hypothesis states that each epoch has had a signature beverage and that six major beverages have played a role in the development, structure, and culture of civilization from its beginnings to today.

Lesson

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue to the book. As a group, conduct research on thesis structure and identify in one to two sentences the hypothesis that the author establishes in the reading. What is the author setting out to prove in this work? Do you think this sounds like a valid hypothesis? Why or why not?
