• In the nonfiction book A History of the World in 6 Glasses, author and journalist Tom Standage examines history through the lens of six beverages that shaped and influenced civilization from its roots through today.
• In his Introduction: “Vital Fluids,” Standage asserts his hypothesis that different man-created beverages have arisen alongside historical trends and that in some cases these beverages have influenced history in unexpected ways.
• Part 1: “Beer in Mesopotamia and Egypt” is comprised of two chapters. The first chapter, “A Stone-Age Brew,” begins with the earliest humans who migrated from Africa around 50,000 years ago.
