The castle of Coucy is one of the primary settings for A Distant Mirror. This lesson discusses the region and its historical importance as a "key to the country."
Lesson
1. Research activity. Give students reference materials and ask them to research the history of the region, from ancient times to the 14th century. What were the primary uses of that land? Who were the major rulers and influences leading up to the 14th century?
2. Mapping the book. Make a map that shows the region of Coucy and the rest of the states of Europe that figure in the book. Chart the location of other prominent people and military engagements.
3. Class discussion. What was Coucy the key to? What were the neighboring lands that opened from Coucy? Describe the importance of the resources found in those lands, and their importance in the culture of the 14th...
