The story takes place in the rural town of Learning, Vermont. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about the Vermont that the Pecks knew.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about what rural Vermont life would have been like for the Pecks. What can the students offer about any previous study they have done about this time period and geography? What are the perceptions of Vermont life that may have been altered after having read this book? What did they expect? What surprised them? What do they think about Vermont after they have viewed it through the Pecks' eyes?

Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a topic related to rural Vermont life. After they have researched their topic, they should prepare a visual presentation to share with the rest of the class. Suggested topics include farming, foods...
