Nesta remembers her father's last moments. The King of Hybern had brought him to her and Elain, and her father had said that he loved her. His final words had been for the king not to put his hands on his daughter. Nesta had hated her father, but he had loved her. Not enough to try to spare them from poverty or keep them from starving. Somehow, though, he had loved them enough to raise an army on the continent and sail a ship named for her. She had hated her father in those last moments. She resented that he died for her.

Nesta is taken to her sister Feyre's estate. Feyre tells Nesta that it is time for some changes. She is not going to sit by and watch while Nesta destroys herself drinking and partying every night.
