Objective

Objective: Chapter 1, Origins of an Obsession This lesson will focus on the beginning of the book, with special focus on the author, the opening quote, and the first page of the novel. By paying special attention to these details, the students will be better able to continue on with the novel in an informed fashion. The objective of this lesson will be on an orientation of the beginning of the novel.

1) 1.) Class Discussion: Lead a discussion with the class on the following: What do we know from the title alone? When was this book published? Have we ever heard of the author? What do we know about detective novels?

2.) Research Activity: Have the students read a short biography of Eric Ambler to familiarize themselves with the author. Have them think about the following questions: What kinds of novels did Ambler write? How many? Was he popular? When...
