Objective: Letters, 1949 - 1950 The objective of this lesson is to look beyond the requests for books that are the basis of the letters to see a respectful relationship begin to grow.
1. Discuss as a class how Helene Hanff writes to the proprietors of the Marks & Co. bookstore in London, England, on October 5, 1949. What prompted Helene's first letter? What does she think of the term "antiquarian booksellers"? What do you think Mark & Co. intended the term to mean?
2. What books does Helene request in her letter? What is the tone of the letter? Based on this first letter, what do you imagine Helene to be like? Describe her. Write your answer in 2-3 paragraphs and then share responses with the class.
