The epigraph Ben Lerner includes before Part One of 10:04 focuses on mythology shared by the Hassidim. Lerner states, "The Hassidim tell a story about the world to come that says everything there will be just as it is here" (i). Lerner writes that the story explains how even "the clothes we wear in this world, those too we will wear there" (i) and how our babies will sleep in the same places there that they sleep now when they are here. Lerner evokes the theme of alternative realities and the bending of time and space that will come to inhabit the narrative when he concludes about the story, "Everything will be as it is now, just a little different" (i).
