For most of its young history, the United States has had a close bond with England. The two countries have been allies in numerous conflicts and wars and have supported each other in other ways as well. The statement below is an excerpt of a speech given by Tony Blair, the prime minister of Great Britain, to the House of Commons a few days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Blair asserts that these attacks were not just on the United States but on democracy itself. The terrorists' goal is to frighten the United States and other democratic societies into abandoning or changing their beliefs, values, and ideals. Therefore, he argues it is imperative that the world stand together in the war against terrorism and those who support it.
