The most famous of all American frontiersmen, the Kentucky pioneer Daniel Boone forever changed the history of westward settlement. He shocked his Eastern contemporaries with his Indian leggings and braided hair and disappeared for months at a time on "long hunts" for game and pelts. Boone helped create a backwoods culture that sharply contrasted that of the increasingly genteel seaboard communities and encouraged thousands of European Americans to settle the backcountry, pushing the frontier far west of the Appalachians.
