King Stephen Bathory of Poland dies. He is succeeded by Sigismund III Vasa, son of John III Vasa of Sweden and grandson of Sigismund I of Poland. After he becomes king of Sweden in 1592, Sigismund III unsuccessfully attempts to create a permanent union between the two countries, setting off a series of wars that lasts until 1660
