Many non-Serbs in Bosnia were quickly annihilated in the initial stages of the war. Serbs—and to a lesser extent, Croats—began conducting "ethnic cleansing" to expunge Muslims from territories under their control. In most instances, the Bosnian Serb Army (BSA) would enter a village, shoot most of the Muslim men, and take the rest to concentration camps, where they were starved, tortured, and often killed. The Muslim women were often sent to rape camps, where they were repeatedly raped by BSA soldiers. Many analysts believe that the soldiers who committed the rapes were obeying orders from Karadzic, who wanted Muslim women impregnated by Serbs in order to enlarge the Serbian population in Bosnia. The remaining women and children of the village were loaded into cattle cars and shipped to refugee centers. Those who survived the journey in the airless, cramped cars often grew ill...
