Shannon Faulkner becomes the first woman to attend The Citadel, a statesupported all-male military college in Charleston, South Carolina, as a member of its Corps of Cadets. She drops out of the school on 18 August.

With the approval of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), The New York Times and The Washington Post publish the Unabomber Manifesto, which rails against modern technology and environmental destruction, two areas in which the bombing attacks had been targeted.

O. J. Simpson is acquitted of the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman.
