The first massive campus revolt of the 1960s began in late 1964 at the University of California at Berkeley. At the time, several civil rights and other political groups had been setting up tables near the college entrance in order to raise money and pass out leaflets. The protests began in the autumn of 1964 when the school's Board of Regents told students that they could no longer use that space because they were blocking pedestrian traffic. Students believed that the real reason was that the conservative Board of Regents did not appreciate their left-leaning activities.
