The author Quintilian, in his work on the proper education of an orator, begins with advice about almost every aspect of the child's care). He advises parents (The Elements of Oratory 1.1.4-5):
Above all, make sure that the infant's nurse speaks correctly. . . . Of course, she should without doubt be chosen on the basis of good moral character, but still make sure that she speaks correctly as well. The child will hear his nurse first, and will learn to speak by imitating her words. And by nature we remember, best those things which we learned when our minds were youngest.
