Hayes won the Republican nomination on the seventh ballot; U.S. senator James G. Blaine of Maine was the leader on the first six ballots. Despite having fewer popular votes than Democrat Tilden, Hayes won the election after a special electoral commission awarded the twenty disputed electoral votes of Florida, Louisiana, Oregon, and South Carolina to Hayes.
