Millard Fillmore became president of the United States following the death of Zachary Taylor. (See Taylor entry for election results from the Taylor/Fillmore campaign.) This marked the second time in U.S. history that a vice president became president following the death of his predecessor. Fillmore attempted unsuccessfully to be elected as president on his own. In 1852, he lost the Whig nomination to Winfield Scott; in 1856, as the American (Know-Nothing) Party nominee, he came in third place behind Democrat James Buchanan and Republican John Frémont.
