Lyndon B. Johnson became president of the United States following the death of John F. Kennedy. (See Kennedy entry for election results from the Kennedy/Johnson campaign.) This marked the eighth time in U.S. history that a vice president became president following the death of his predecessor. Johnson's victory in 1964 marked the fourth time that a former vice president finishing his predecessor's term was elected as president on his own in the next election.
