The 1952 U.S. Senate race between John F. Kennedy and Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. had an interesting parallel. In 1916, Henry Cabot Lodge Sr. defeated "Honey" Fitzgerald, Kennedy's maternal grandfather, for a Senate seat. Lodge Sr. went on to become a vocal opponent of President Woodrow Wilson's plans for American involvement in the League of Nations. Kennedy won in 1952 against Lodge Jr. and became a vocal proponent for further American involvement in international affairs. Kennedy and Lodge were involved in another election eight years later when Kennedy and his running mate, Lyndon B. Johnson, defeated Richard M. Nixon and his running mate, Lodge, in the presidential election of 1960.
