In 1960, the year that John F. Kennedy (1917-1963; see entry in volume 5) was elected president, the most popular play on Broadway was called Camelot. The musical about the court and castle of the legendary King Arthur had several popular songs, including one with the lyric, "Don't let it be forgot / That once there was a spot / For one brief shining moment / That was known as Camelot."
The name Camelot was soon applied to the Kennedy White House. As well as being the center of power of a great land, the White House was transformed into a showcase of American history and a setting for festive occasions during the Kennedy years. The president and first lady hosted elegant parties with guest lists that included foreign dignitaries, talented artists of all kinds, and accomplished scientists.
