Incumbent president Ford narrowly defeated former California governor Ronald Reagan on the first ballot, 1,187 to 1,070. An interesting footnote in the election occurred when two former Georgia governors were on the national ballot: Jimmy Carter, as the Democratic nominee, and Lester G. Maddox, as the obscure American Independent Party nominee. Maddox had also served as Carter's lieutenant governor.
