A two-thirds majority was required by the Democrats to secure the nomination. Former president Martin Van Buren and former secretary of war Lewis Cass were the early leaders in the first seven ballots, but neither received two-thirds of the votes. Polk's name was introduced in the eighth ballot, and he won the nomination on the ninth ballot.
