Incumbent president Truman upset Dewey, who had also lost in the 1944 presidential election. Two factions of the Democratic Party broke off: one, the States' Rights Democratic (Dixiecrat) Party, led by South Carolina governor Thurmond, won four states; the other, the Progressive Party, led by former vice president Henry A. Wallace, was less successful. Popular World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower was wooed by both parties, but he declined to enter the race.
