Harry S. Truman became president of the United States following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. (See Roosevelt entry for election results from the Roosevelt/Truman campaign.) This marked the seventh time in U.S. history that a vice president became president following the death of his predecessor. Truman's victory in 1948 marked the third time that a former vice president finishing his predecessor's term was elected as president on his own in the next election.
