The nation's capital was located in New York when Washington first took office in 1789. The following year it was moved to Philadelphia. The District of Columbia was then agreed on as the site of the nation's capital. Construction began on the Capitol building beginning in 1793. Washington was the only president who did not live in Washington, D.C., during his presidency.
