Chester A. Arthur became president of the United States following the death of James A. Garfield. (See Garfield entry for election results from the Garfield/Arthur campaign.) This marked the fourth time in U.S. history that a vice president became president following the death of his predecessor. In 1884, Arthur attempted to be elected as president on his own, but lost the Republican nomination to James G. Blaine.
