Former secretary of the Treasury John Sherman was the early leader in the race for the Republican nomination. Harrison went from fifth place on the first ballot to his victory on the eighth ballot. On the Democratic side, former Ohio senator Thurman was chosen as the incumbent president Cleveland's running mate; Cleveland's previous running mate, Thomas A. Hendricks, had died during his first year as vice president.
