Andrew Johnson became president of the United States following the death of Abraham Lincoln. (See Lincoln entry for election results from the Lincoln / Johnson campaign.) This marked the third time in U.S. history that a vice president became president following the death of his predecessor. In 1868, Johnson attempted to be elected as president on his own, but lost the Democratic nomination to Horatio Seymour.
