The harbor was not the only area on Oahu targeted by Fuchida and his pilots. The Hickam, Wheeler, and Bellows airfields came under attack, too, as the Japanese attempted to destroy local American airpower while it was still on the ground. This goal was largely achieved, although a handful of American pilots did manage to get their planes into the air and shoot down a few enemy craft.
At Hickam Field, the large, new consolidated barracks was one of the main targets. The engineering building was devastated, as were Hangars 11 and 15; several other hangars sustained moderate or minor damage. Because the planes on the runway were parked so close together, when one was hit the explosion often ignited the others around it. Luckily, the attackers failed to find and destroy the base's underground fuel tanks; they mistakenly thought they were under the baseball...
