Shepherd Stationed in Malaya, in the Far East, in 1941, British air force technician Peter J. Shepherd was ordered to take part in a covert mission in Indochina. During the mission, on December 4, just three days before the Japanese raid on Hawaii, he had a chance encounter in a restaurant with a Japanese man. In the course of a long conversation, the man revealed that he was an engineer who had earlier that year worked aboard an aircraft carrier that was bound for Pearl Harbor. The engineer also told Shepherd that the Japanese planned to attack British installations in the Far East. Shepherd made his way back to Malaya and reported what he had heard to his superiors, but the information was apparently not taken seriously.
