Bill Clinton was the forty-second president of the United States. He and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, visited Oklahoma City shortly after the bombing to participate in a memorial service. In 1996 the Clintons returned to Oklahoma City for the one-year anniversary of the bombing. The following reading is an excerpt of his speech at that memorial service in which he consoled the victims' families and commended them for their actions which prove that good can overcome evil.
President Clinton praised them for their strength, courage, and faith and urged them to continue their efforts to rebuild. The citizens of Oklahoma, he asserted, have drawn the nation closer together and have shown that even the most tragic disasters cannot extinguish the hope and love that is within each person.
