One of the most riveting photographs of the Oklahoma City bombing is of firefighter Chris Fields gently cradling the body of a bloody young child. The photograph, taken by a freelance photographer, appeared on the cover of The Economist and Newsweek magazines. The child in the photo is of one-year-old Baylee Almon, who had celebrated her birthday the day before the explosion.
The following essay is written by Baylee's mother, Aren Almon, nearly two years after her daughter's death. Almon describes the anguish she has endured not only because of Baylee's death, but also because of criticism from other victims' families and survivors over the publicity of the photo.
