The first break for the FBI had come just a few hours after the bombing. Law enforcement authorities found the rear axle from the Ryder truck a block away from the Murrah building. The FBI found the vehicle identification number on the axle and traced the truck to a rental agency in Junction City, Kansas. According to Eldon Elliott, the owner of the rental agency, he had rented the truck to a man named Robert Kling on Monday, April 17. By 5 P.M. on the day of the bombing, an FBI artist was in Junction City drawing sketches of Robert Kling and the man who had accompanied him to the rental agency.
