On April 14 McVeigh's 1983 Pontiac station wagon blew a head gasket just as he was pulling into Junction City, Kansas, after making the final trip from Kingman, Arizona. At a service station in town, McVeigh bought a 1977 Mercury Marquis for $250 plus the title of the Pontiac. After completing the transaction, McVeigh used a pay phone to call Elliott's Body Shop in Junction City, which also rented Ryder trucks. McVeigh, using the name Robert Kling, told the owner that he needed a truck to haul five thousand pounds to Omaha, Nebraska (about the same distance from Junction City as Oklahoma City).
