August 21–22: Federal law enforcement agents surround the home of Randy Weaver in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, to arrest him on weapons charges. During a gun battle that lasts two days, Weaver's fourteen-year-old son and wife are killed as well as a U.S. marshal. A criminal investigation into the shooting leads to dismissal of the weapons charges against Weaver due to entrapment, and the U.S. Justice Department is ordered to pay him $3.1 million in compensation for the deaths of his family members.
