After several months, he was canonized a saint by Pope Alexander III and in time became one of the most popular saints in medieval England. Thousands of pilgrims annually visited Canterbury Cathedral to offer prayers to the man whom the faithful considered a holy martyr and to glimpse the sacred spot where he was slain.
