The Almoravids pillage the Ghanian capital of Kumbi (about two hundred miles north of the modern city of Bamako in Mali), precipitating the gradual breakup of its empire and years of warfare among successor states. The rulers of the Mandigo kingdom of Kangaba (on the east) and the Songhai kingdom of Gao (on the west) are soon converted to Islam.
