At the invitation of Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir, Badr al-Jamali seizes power in Cairo, executing leading officials and military officers. As commander of the army, head of the religious establishment, and vizier, Badr al-Jamali essentially rules the Fatmid Empire. He is succeeded by his son and a series of autocrats, reducing the caliphs to puppets.
