Fatimid caliph al-Aziz dies and is succeeded by his son al-Hakim. Known as the "Mad Caliph," he declares himself an emanation of deity and attempts to make Shiite Islam the established religion of Egypt, persecuting Jews and Christians. (The cult of Hakim still exists among the present-day Druses of Syria.)
