By this time Arabs and Persians have settled along the east coast of Africa, where they found cities such as Mogadishu (tenth century) in present-day Somalia, and Manda (ninth century) and Mombasa (eleventh century) in present-day Kenya. They trade with Africans in the interior for ivory, gold, and slaves for sale in India and the Arabian peninsula.
