Al-Mahdi proclaims himself caliph of Tunis, establishing the Fatimid dynasty. Refusing to recognize the sovereignty of the 'Abbasid caliphs, he begins his family's gradual conquest of all North Africa from the Muslim Empire. The Fatimids are a branch of Ishmaelites who claim descent from Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.
