Al-Mu'tasim becomes caliph of the Muslim Empire. He enlists non-Muslim mercenaries in his personal army, initiating the decline of the 'Abbasid dynasty. Though they convert to Islam, these troops—which include Berbers, Slavs, and especially Turks—are personally loyal to their officers, not the caliph.
