Al-Ma'mun (Mamun the Great), whose reign began in 813, is the seventh 'Abbasid caliph of the Muslim Empire and is known for the House of Knowledge he established in Baghdad. During his twenty-year reign and that of his successor, al-Mu'tasim (833-842), scholars there translate Greek, Syriac, Persian, and Sanskrit works of philosophy, science, and literature, as well as making significant discoveries in fields such as astronomy, mathematics, and medicine.
