Ashikaga Takauji, who has proclaimed himself shogun, drives Emperor Go-Daigo of Japan from the capital and places Kogon on the throne, establishing the Ashikaga shogunate, under which Japanese feudalism enters its golden age. During the Ashikaga period, which lasts until 1568, aristocrats depend on armed retainers (samurai), who follow a strict code of conduct (bushido).
