Abbasid caliph al-Muhtadi is forced to abdicate by his Turkish troops, who choose al- Mu'tamid, son of al-Mutawakkil, as the next caliph. During al-Mu'tamid's twenty-two-year reign and those of his two successors (892-908), the 'Abbasids manage to keep control over the power-hungry Turkish guard.
