Berliners are known for working hard but also for playing hard. Berlin has a thriving nightlife—cabarets, discos, clubs, bars—as well as many theaters, concerts, and opera performances. Because West and East Berlin existed for four decades as two separate cities, it is sometimes said that the nowunified Berlin offers twice as many opportunities for entertainment and recreation as other cities. In 2000, Berlin had about two hundred cinemas and theaters— including twenty children's theaters—and nearly five hundred museums and art galleries. In addition, Berlin's culture is the product of many international influences and a diverse population, so there is a wide range of choices for leisure-time activities. To help plan their entertainment, Berliners can consult the Kunstkalender (arts calendar), a monthly publication that lists the city's full range of cultural events from concerts to museum exhibits.
