Emperor Henry VI, heir to Norman domains, demands Durazzo (in present-day Albania) and Thessalonica (in Greece) from the Byzantines, but Henry's death in 1197 removes any immediate threat from the West, as civil war breaks out between rivals for the German crown: Henry's brother Philip of Swabia, supported by France, and Otto of Brunswick, who is backed by England and is recognized by Pope Innocent III as Otto IV of German in 1201.
